Medicare Part B

Medical insurance for the doctor visits and outpatient care you rely on

Medicare Part B, known as medical insurance, helps cover medically necessary outpatient services and preventive care to help you stay healthy and catch issues early.

In plain language

Part B helps cover outpatient medically necessary services and supplies used to diagnose or treat health conditions, along with preventive services designed to catch issues early.

Unlike Part A, Part B generally comes with a monthly premium. Most people pay the standard premium amount, though it can be higher depending on income.

Who this may be for

  • People age 65 or older enrolling in Original Medicare who need outpatient and preventive care coverage.
  • Individuals under 65 with a qualifying disability.
  • People diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

What it generally covers

  • Doctor visits, including primary care and specialist appointments.
  • Outpatient care and procedures.
  • Preventive services, such as flu shots, cancer screenings and annual wellness visits.
  • Diagnostic tests, including lab work and imaging.
  • Durable medical equipment, such as walkers, wheelchairs and oxygen equipment.
  • Ambulance services.
  • Chemotherapy, dialysis and other medically necessary treatments.

Coverage, costs and availability vary by policy, carrier, eligibility and location. The details above are educational and are not a description of any specific plan.

Important choices and considerations

Eligibility for Medicare Part B

  • You are 65 or older.
  • You are under 65 with a qualifying disability.
  • You have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
  • Enrollment in Part B is optional, but delaying without other creditable coverage may lead to a late enrollment penalty, which is why many people enroll as soon as they're eligible. Depending on your situation, you may or may not be enrolled automatically.

Out-of-pocket costs to plan for

  • A monthly premium, set annually and potentially higher based on income (using your tax return from two years prior).
  • An annual deductible.
  • Coinsurance, typically 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for services.
  • Copayments for some outpatient services.

Potential limitations and exclusions

  • Part B does not cover routine dental, vision or hearing care, or hearing aids.
  • Part B does not cover most prescription drugs; that's generally the role of Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.
  • Part B does not cover alternative treatments such as acupuncture, except in limited, specific cases.
