Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Help covering the costs Original Medicare leaves behind

Medigap, also called Medicare Supplement Insurance, is offered by private insurance companies to help pay out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare does not cover.

In plain language

Medigap policies can help pay copayments, coinsurance and deductibles that you would otherwise owe under Original Medicare.

Medigap plans are standardized and must provide a core set of benefits, though some plans offer additional coverage, such as help with emergency medical care while traveling outside the United States.

Who this may be for

  • People enrolled in Original Medicare (Parts A and B) who want more predictable out-of-pocket costs.
  • Individuals who prefer the flexibility of Original Medicare's nationwide provider access over a network-based Medicare Advantage plan.
  • People considering whether to switch from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare paired with Medigap.

What it generally covers

  • A standardized core set of benefits that every Medigap plan of a given type must include.
  • Cost-sharing amounts such as copayments, coinsurance and deductibles left over from Original Medicare.
  • Some plans may include additional coverage, such as help with emergency medical care incurred while traveling outside the United States.

Coverage, costs and availability vary by policy, carrier, eligibility and location. The details above are educational and are not a description of any specific plan.

Important choices and considerations

Am I eligible for a Medigap plan?

  • You must be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B.
  • You'll pay a monthly premium for the Medigap policy, in addition to your Part B premium.
  • Medigap policies cover one person, so married couples generally need separate policies.
  • If you're currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C), you are generally not eligible for a Medigap policy unless you switch back to Original Medicare.

Potential limitations and exclusions

  • Medigap policies do not include prescription drug coverage; a separate Part D plan is generally needed.
  • You cannot hold both a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medigap policy at the same time.
  • Medigap covers only one individual per policy, so household coverage requires multiple policies.
  • Depending on when you apply, medical underwriting may affect your ability to enroll or the premium you're offered outside of certain guaranteed-issue windows.
